The entertainment industry was saddened by the news of the passing of veteran actor Achyut Potdar, who died on August 18, 2025, at the age of 90. The news was shared by Outlook Entertainment Desk.

Potdar, who was born on August 22, 1934, in Jabalpur, British India, had a long and illustrious career spanning over four decades. He worked in over 125 films, 95 serials, 26 plays, and 45 advertisements during his career.

Potdar started his acting career later in life, debuting in films at age 44 without formal acting training. Before acting, he was a professor and served as a captain in the Indian Army, retiring in 1967, and later worked as an executive at Indian Oil until 1992.

Potdar's film roles included appearances in critically and commercially acclaimed movies such as 3 Idiots, where he played a strict but endearing engineering professor famous for the dialogue "kya baat hai". Other notable films include Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Aakrosh, Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyoon Aata Hai, Ardh Satya, Tezaab, Parinda, Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Dilwale, Rangeela, Vaastav, Hum Saath Saath Hain, Parineeta, Dabangg 2, Ferrari Ki Sawaari, and Ventilator.

Potdar was a regular collaborator and friend of filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra. On television, he appeared in popular shows including Wagle Ki Duniya, Majha Hoshil Na, Mrs. Tendulkar, Bharat Ki Khoj, Amita Ka Amit, and Pradhanmantri (portraying Jayaprakash Narayan).

Potdar was admitted to Jupiter Hospital in Thane with breathing and heart issues around 4 p.m. on August 18 and passed away at 10:30 p.m. Dr. Ravindra Ghawat, Director of the Critical Care Department at Jupiter Hospital, confirmed Potdar's death.

Film director Hansal Mehta remembered Potdar, expressing his admiration for Potdar's role in Angaar and their collaboration in Jayate. Film director Sudhir Mishra also remembered Potdar, mentioning his work in Albert Pinto Ko Gussa kyon Aata hai. Boman Irani, who worked with Potdar in 3 Idiots, remembered Potdar as a true gentleman and a memorable artist. Irani expressed his condolences for Potdar on Instagram Story. Aamir Khan, who also worked with Potdar in 3 Idiots, described him as an amazing actor, a wonderful human being, and a great colleague. Khan also expressed his condolences for Potdar on Instagram Story.
