Activities rated by the ESRB for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 reveal persistent cannabis-themed cosmetics
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, the latest instalment in the popular first-person shooter franchise, has been rated M for Mature by the ESRB, due in part to the inclusion of marijuana-themed content. This controversial element has been a recurring feature in the Call of Duty series, with previous games like Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3 incorporating marijuana imagery in weapon camos, operator skins, and even kill animations.
In Black Ops 7, the player's character is depicted inhaling marijuana from a bong-like structure attached to a rifle, and during execution sequences, characters are shown smoking joints or inhaling through bongs. This marks a continuation of the series' history of marijuana-friendly aesthetics.
However, it seems that there are no new weed-themed content inclusions at launch for Black Ops 7. The decision not to carry forward purchased bundles was made to allow the Black Ops team to focus on characters related to the Black Ops franchise without overlap from the Modern Warfare series. This could potentially indicate that Treyarch will revive the Carry Forward policy for Black Ops 7, and that the weed content from Black Ops 6 will be available to multiplayer fans in Black Ops 7 at launch.
In recent years, the increasing use of marijuana imagery in the Call of Duty series has caused frustration among some members of the community. Notable examples include the Cheech and Chong Operator Bundle in Modern Warfare 3, which features a kill animation that turns eliminated player characters into burnt blunts, and the stoned Sloth bundle in MW3. Sledgehammer Games also introduced G3T_H1GH and G3T_H1GH3R limited modes in Modern Warfare 3, and Dr. Kushlov was introduced as an operator bundle in Modern Warfare 2.
Despite the controversy, there is currently no publicly available information indicating a way to disable or hide marijuana-themed content specifically in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. Standard platform parental controls or content restrictions (on consoles or PCs) might provide some broad filtering, but no game-specific toggle or setting for marijuana-themed content in Black Ops 7 has been documented as of August 2025. The official statements focus on content authenticity and the removal of certain operators and weapons from previous titles without carry-forward into Black Ops 7, rather than content customization or censorship features. No details have surfaced about parental controls or in-game settings that allow content filtering based on marijuana themes.
