Iran's Activists Speak Out: 700 Executions So Far This Year
In a stark revelation, activists claim that as many as 700 death sentences have been carried out in Iran this year. The Norway-based human rights organization, Hengaw, shared this news on the online platform X (formerly Twitter). Unfortunately, Hengaw didn't supply a comparable figure for the previous year.
Recent years have seen an average of 600 executions annually, as reported by the organization Iran Human Rights. Delving into the first ten months of the year, Iran Human Rights recently unveiled a surge in executions within the country.
Human rights advocates have long criticized the death penalty's use within the Islamic Republic. Alarmingly, there aren't any official figures on executions. Furthermore, Iran executed eight protest participants last year, as charged by human rights organizations. They frequently accuse the Iranian government of employing executions as a tool to suppress protests and minority ethnic groups.
The international community has raised concerns about the high volume of executions, with advocates urging for the abolition of the death penalty in Iran. The use of such capital punishment, especially for individuals accused of human rights violations, raises significant questions concerning justice and upholding fundamental human rights.
However, it's worth noting that sources indicate that at least 853 executions occurred in Iran in 2023, which is higher than the 700 reported by activists. This discrepancy amounts to 153 executions, as 853 surpasses 700.
