Spotlight on Navalny's Courage Award

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny graced the spotlight once more as he bagged the Courage Award, dedicating it to the political prisoners languishing in Russia and Belarus. His daughter, Darya Navalnaya, shared the heartfelt message during an interview with Euronews.

The prestigious award is bestowed annually by 25 international human rights organizations at the Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy, a gathering that attracts activists and victims of political oppression from across the globe. With the ongoing pandemic, this year's event took the digital route. Darya accepted the award on her father's behalf.

In a touching tribute, Darya revealed that Alexei asked her to dedicate this recognition to every imprisoned soul in Russia and Belarus. He expressed his concern for the less-famous prisoners, stating they are often in a more challenging position than him. Yet, they should remember they are neither alone nor forgotten, she quoted.

Hillel Neuer, the executive director of UN Watch, one of the summit's organizers, praised Navalny for his remarkable bravery and relentless efforts in exposing the human rights violations orchestrated by the Russian government.

After a brief recovery from a poisoning incident that the international community attributes to Russian authorities, Navalny was arrested upon his return to Russia in January and is currently serving a two-and-a-half-year sentence for a fraud charge. His allies and supporters claim the verdict to be politically motivated.

Awards like the Courage Award hold significant weight in highlighting human rights violations and amplifying the voices of victims, even as they face severe repression. The heroic efforts of recipients, such as Alexei Navalny and the visually impaired Afghan lawyer, Benafsha Yaqoobi, who won the International Women of Courage Award, serve as reminders of the need for global unity in championing freedom and justice.
