ActionPlas Invests £1M in Cutting-Edge CMM for Formula 1 Precision

ActionPlas Group has upgraded its quality control department with a new high-precision coordinate measuring machine (CMM). The Altera M 20.12.10, supplied by LK Metrology, forms part of a £1 million investment aimed at serving Formula 1 clients. The company specialises in machining and fabricating plastic and metal components for demanding industries.

The decision to purchase the CMM came after evaluating alternatives, including handheld probing systems. ActionPlas chose the automated machine for its superior accuracy and ability to handle complex inspections. With a working volume of 2.0 x 1.2 x 1 metres, it can measure large components and assemblies efficiently.

The CMM is fitted with a Renishaw SP25M Scanning Probe Kit 2, enabling both high-speed scanning and traditional touch probing. This capability supports pre-delivery checks of high-value parts, including those for a Formula 1 team. Components like energy recovery system plastics must meet tight tolerances of ±0.1-0.2mm to withstand extreme conditions—80°C temperatures and 15,000 RPM speeds.

Delivery and installation took just two weeks from the order date. LK Metrology provided on-site training, assisting with the measurement of initial components. The machine is now in daily use across research, quality control, and production departments.

The upgrade has allowed ActionPlas to take on more intricate and higher-value projects. This move is expected to drive significant business growth in the coming months.

The new CMM strengthens ActionPlas' ability to meet strict quality demands, particularly for motorsport clients. Its automated inspection and high precision help ensure components perform under extreme conditions. The investment aligns with the company's push into more specialised and lucrative manufacturing contracts.
