The game caters to both new and experienced players, with an automatic rewind feature for beginners to compete on an even footing. Challenges range from simple tasks like collecting coins to more complex ones like clearing an entire course. For those seeking a greater challenge, Legend Challenges are available.
Completing challenges earns a letter ranking, with each week offering timed online events in both World Championship Mode and Survival Mode. With a Nintendo Switch Online membership, players can compete against friends and players worldwide.
In Survival Mode, players race against the ghost data of seven other players, with half being eliminated after each round. Up to 8 players can enjoy Party Mode, either individually or in themed Challenge packs.
The games included in the challenges are The Legend of ZeldaTM, Super Mario Bros.TM 3, Donkey KongTM, MetroidTM, and others. Completing challenges also earns in-game coins that can be used to unlock more challenges and icons.
To play, you'll need a 64-bit operating system, such as Windows 10 (64-bit) or macOS Catalina (10.15) or newer. A 64-bit processor, at least 12 GB of memory (RAM), a graphics card equivalent to an RTX 2080 Super, RTX 3070, or AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT, 8 GB of VRAM, at least 771.53 MB of storage on an SSD, and input devices supported include Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons, Keyboard and Mouse, Xbox or PlayStation controllers.
The game is styled around the original Nintendo World Championships competitive format but presented with a modern interface and updated mechanics. It supports online multiplayer modes requiring internet connectivity and can receive downloadable content (DLC) and updates, which must be installed separately as .nsp files for emulators like Yuzu.
