Cinema Milestone: Director Ryan Coogler's "Sinners"

Director Ryan Coogler extends his heartfelt thanks to moviegoers for propelling his latest flick, the gripping supernatural thriller "Sinners," to the top of the box office charts during its inaugural weekend.

On his popular social media platform, Coogler acknowledged the effort put into attending the theater, appreciating those who arranged babysitters, carpooled, and rearranged work schedules.

"I tip my hat to those who watched it more than once, who spread the word, whether it be through personal recommendations, social media posts, or text message chains," he penned. "‘Sinners' is a labor of love that takes inspiration from my family and heritage. It's a film we aimed to make for audiences in theaters."

Coogler conceived and helmed "Sinners," a spine-tingling horror flick centered around twin brothers – both portrayed by his longtime collaborator, Michael B. Jordan – who grapple with chilling paranormal encounters after opening a juke joint, a southern cultural melting pot of food, drink, and music, in their hometown of Mississippi.

The ensemble cast boasts the likes of Hailee Steinfeld, breakout star Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell, and Delroy Lindo, among others.

"Sinners" debuted simultaneously on IMAX and standard screens on Friday and shattered predictions, earning $45.6 million domestically, with estimates suggesting a mere $35 million in revenues. Worldwide, the film has amassed over $71 million as of Tuesday. ("Sinners" is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. Warner Bros. Discovery is the parent company of CNN.)

"Sinners" resonates deeply with Coogler, who wrote that his ancestry imbued him with life and purpose. The audience's support and embrace of the film have made this connection even more meaningful for the director.

Another notable aspect of the movie is that it's the first to have been shot using two different aspect ratios: Ultra Panavision 70mm (2.76:1 aspect ratio) and IMAX 15 Perf (1.43:1 aspect ratio). This pioneering approach offers cinema enthusiasts a visually captivating experience tailored to their theater and projection methods.

"The audience's response to the film has rejuvenated me and many others in the industry," Coogler concludes. "Together we can broaden the perception of what a blockbuster is, alter the definition of horror films, and redefine the idea of an IMAX crowd."

Renowned for the critically acclaimed "Fruitvale Station," the acclaimed "Creed" series, and the two "Black Panther" films for Marvel, including the Oscar-nominated sequel, Coogler has proven his cinematic mastery time and time again.
