Achim Reichel, a pioneer of German pop and rock, has received the Federal Cross of Merit for his lifelong contributions to music. The award recognises his impact on German culture, blending rock, folk, and classical influences over six decades. Hamburg's Senator for Culture, Carsten Brosda, presented the honour at a ceremony in City Hall.
Reichel first rose to fame in the 1960s as the guitarist and lead singer of The Rattles, one of Germany's most successful Beat bands. The group toured England alongside the Rolling Stones and performed across Germany with the Beatles, cementing their place in music history.
After The Rattles, Reichel built a solo career that spanned rock, sea shanties, and reworked classical poetry. His unique style combined traditional German folk with modern rock, earning him widespread acclaim. Decades later, his influence remains strong, shaping generations of German musicians. To mark his 80th birthday, Reichel released *How Beautiful It Was! The Farewell Concert*, a collection of his greatest hits. The album celebrated his long career, from early rock anthems to later folk-inspired works.
