The Krefeld Regional Court recently heard a contentious trial over an accused forced marriage and multitude of alleged rapes, resulting in shocking acquittals in mere hours. Two Syrian men in their thirties faced charges.
The drama unfolded as the prosecution relied heavily on the girl's testimony, stating that the two men had wed her unconsentingly in Krefeld when she was 15. Moreover, the younger man was alleged to have violated her nearly 140 times over months.
Ritual of Unrecognized Union
The 30-year-old defendant wed the girl in the Netherlands according to Islamic law in Jan 2022. In Germany, such marriages lack official recognition under civil law.
The court harbored doubts over the girl's credibility and enlisted an expert's advice. The psychiatrist deemed her incriminating account implausible and contradictory.

Neither the forced marriage, nor the girl's numerous rapes could be proven in court, the presiding judge stated. "Evidence points to the contrary."
Her digital correspondence with the suspect appeared affectionate, with her expressing love and sending heart emojis. Intimate photos were also found on her phone. The girl declared that she had been coerced.
Accused Unjustly?
The defendants were charged with unlawful detention, bodily harm, and attempted coercion. The 30-year-old was also accused of rape with regards to over a hundred instances.
The Syrian suspects, represented by lawyers, denied the accusations and claimed they were fabricated. The young woman may have lied due to familial animosity, they argued. The 30-year-old spoke of a loving relationship.
The engagement supposedly took place in Syria in 2021. Two months later, the 15-year-old arrived in Germany. The public prosecutor hinted at the potential launch of criminal proceedings against the young woman for misrepresentation and perjury.
