A New Wave of Legal Troubles for a Left-Wing Extremist Group

Johann G. and another defendant are also alleged to have coordinated an attack in Budapest, Hungary in February 2023, targeting individuals deemed to be part of the 'right-wing spectrum.' Multiple victims were injured during this incident.
Several previously underground persons handed themselves over to authorities in connection with this attack in Budapest in January. Their legal representatives aimed to prevent their extradition to Hungary and pushed for trials within Germany due to concerns over potential "excessively long prison sentences" of up to 24 years in Hungary, which they deemed a violation of the rule of law.
Hungary's Courtroom Drama
Another case within this complex made headlines last summer. A person identifying as non-binary and known as Maja was arrested in Berlin at the end of 2023 and extradited to Hungary in June 2024. Hungarian authorities accuse Maja of participating in the Budapest attacks.
Initially, the Federal Constitutional Court barred Maja's extradition in an emergency procedure. However, the decision came just a few minutes too late – Maja had already been handed over to the Hungarian authorities before the decision was made. The highest German court also declared the extradition invalid in the main proceedings. Since February, Maja has been standing trial in Hungary.
Lina E. herself is currently serving a prison sentence. In 2023, the OLG Dresden convicted her for membership in a criminal organization and dangerous bodily harm. The Federal Court of Justice confirmed the conviction in March, making it final. It remains unclear how long E. will have to remain in prison, with pretrial detention being considered among other factors.
