Accused Individual Indicted for Attempted Assassination of a Potential Government Official in Massachusetts

Assailant Charged with Attempted Assassination of Key Figures in U.S. Political Circle

Meet Ryan Michael English, the 24-year-old Massachusetts native accused of attempting to assassinate top cabinet members.

Due in federal court on September 8, English has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

The Department of Justice announced this week that English is under indictment for an attempted assassination of a high-ranking government official on U.S. Capitol grounds.

On Thursday, English was charged with attempting to assassinate a cabinet member nominee and carrying a deadly weapon on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol.

Equipped with a knife and two makeshift Molotov cocktails, English was apprehended in January during his covert operation to eliminate a Treasury Secretary nominee.

His initial court appearance took place on Thursday afternoon.

Initially, English allegedly planned not only to kill Scott Bessent, but also prominent figures like House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Investigators suggest that he was inspired by United HealthCare CEO murder suspect, Luigi Mangione.

English's portrayal as a U.S. Capitol Police officer involved bravely approaching him, with English admitting to possessing two Molotov cocktails and two knives while expressing his intention to kill Scott Bessent. Federal prosecutors assert that English embarked on a journey from Massachusetts to Washington with a mission to assassinate Hegseth (labelled as a "Nazi") and Johnson, as well as to torch the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank near the White House.

During the search that followed, Capitol Police discovered a folding knife and two improvised incendiary devices within English's jacket, along with a green lighter in an additional pocket.
