Accused Individual Allegedly Drugged Another and Made Threats to Take Lives; Now Charged with Murdering a Super Bowl Correspondent

Fresh Take:

Sadly, the sports reporting community is grappling with the tragic loss of Adan Manzano, who met his demise in a New Orleans area hotel room while covering the Super Bowl LIX. This heartbreaking incident was not an isolated event, as the accused murderer, Danette Colbert, had a sinister past that warned of such a turn of events.

Colbert, a notorious career criminal with a penchant for fraud schemes in New Orleans, stands charged with second-degree murder in Manzano's death. Kenner Police Chief Keith Conley once described her as a woman with quite a record and rap sheet, with allegations of drugging men, theft, fraudulent use of credit and debit cards, and other financial crimes under her belt.

One of Colbert's alleged victims, David Butler, warned a judge of the potential danger she posed. In 2021, Butler met Colbert outside a French Quarter bar and accepted her invitation for a drink. After briefly stepping away, Butler returned to find the world spinning out of control. He felt disoriented and woozy, suspecting he had been drugged. Colbert ushered him into a waiting black Suburban SUV, but he has no recollection of the events that followed.

When he awoke, Butler was back in his home, but hundreds of thousands of dollars were missing, and his phone and wallet were gone. The police were less than cooperative, with one officer insinuating that Butler was trying to hire Colbert as a prostitute. Nevertheless, Butler diligently pursued his stolen funds, tracking down Colbert and reporting the theft to the New Orleans Police Department.

Colbert's history of alleged drugging and robbery seems to have culminated in the unfortunate demise of Adan Manzano. While the details of the crime are still under investigation, it's a bitter reminder of the devastating consequences of a dangerous criminal's actions. Butler, who suffered physical and emotional trauma from his encounter with Colbert, can't help but feel haunted by survivor's guilt, fearing that she will strike again.

In a twisted turn of events, the Louisiana Attorney General is now pursuing a higher sentence for Colbert in Butler's case, acknowledging the leniency of the previous ruling and the danger she poses to others. It's a small glimmer of hope for justice in the wake of so much tragedy.
