Twin Brother Blamed for Forced Prostitution Case
In a shocking turn of events in an Altona district court trial, a defendant accused of severe abuse and forced prostitution has pointed the finger at his twin brother as the perpetrator. The 44-year-old declared his innocence, with a court spokesperson revealing that if any crimes were committed, then they must have been carried out by his brother. The twin had resided with the victim, according to her court testimony.
The authorities now plan to conduct further investigations to establish the twin brother's identity, aiming to determine whether they already have his physical characteristics on file. The court canceled a scheduled continuation hearing for next Monday due to these investigations.
The original accusations against the defendant included abusing the Ghanaian woman, whom he'd married under Ghanaian law, on August 30, 2020. He allegedly struck her so violently that she sustained a fractured orbital floor. For over a year, from January 2021 to August 2022, the defendant is said to have forced the woman into prostitution, escorting her to clients near Hamburg Central Station. He reportedly pocketed almost all the earnings, threatening to turn her in to the police and kill her ten-year-old son in Ghana if she refused.
This isn't the first time the Hamburg justice system has encountered the issue of a twin brother: In 2016, a twin brother of the then 35-year-old defendant in a trial involving shots fired in the red-light district suddenly surfaced from abroad. The criminal division at the regional court struggled to verify the brother's identity and only convicted him of minor offenses.
Currently, the court is interested in ascertaining if the physical characteristics of the twin brother have been recorded by the authorities, as he could potentially be responsible for the forced prostitution incidents. While the twin brother lived with the victim, no concrete evidence has yet linked him to the crimes.
