The suspect in the deadly attack on the Magdeburg Christmas market in December 2020 has been formally charged and is set to stand trial in October 2025. Taleb Jawad al-Abdulmohsen, a 50-year-old Saudi doctor, is accused of six counts of murder, 338 counts of attempted murder, and dangerous bodily harm.

The Magdeburg Regional Court has scheduled hearing dates extending through 2026, and the suspect is being considered for security custody during the proceedings. The charges were filed by the General Prosecutor's Office in Naumburg.

According to the investigation, Taleb A. acted alone and was motivated by dissatisfaction and frustration over legal disputes. He reportedly aimed to kill as many people as possible in the attack.

The attack, which lasted one minute and four seconds, resulted in the death of five women aged 45 to 75 and a nine-year-old boy. A total of 344 people were injured. The perpetrator used a 340-horsepower rental car and was traveling at speeds up to 48 kilometers per hour.

The attack was not influenced by alcohol, and there were no accomplices or accessories in the crime. Taleb A. previously worked as a doctor in the forensic psychiatry department in Bernburg (Salzlandkreis), where his area of responsibility included the psychiatric care of criminals on three wards.

A colleague had expressed concerns about Taleb A.'s condition a few months before the attack and had passed these concerns on to superiors. Despite several security authorities dealing with Taleb A., he ultimately slipped through all the nets as an opponent of Islamists.

A psychiatric evaluation has been ordered for Taleb A. to determine his criminal responsibility. However, no public reports have surfaced about the outcome or presence of this evaluation in the current sources. The lightweight hall for the court is being built on a state-owned property in Magdeburg for the trial.

As the trial approaches, the court is preparing for the trial, and special arrangements are underway. The trial is expected to start around October 22, 2025.
