Accusations of homicide levied against those in Magdeburg
Magdeburg Christmas Market Attack: No Prior Criminal History for Saudi Doctor Suspect
Taleb A., the 50-year-old Saudi Arabian doctor charged with the December 2020 Christmas market attack in Magdeburg, Germany, has no reported criminal history before the incident, according to authorities[1][2][3][5]. His known charges relate solely to the attack itself: six counts of murder, 338 counts of attempted murder, and 309 counts of bodily harm[1][2].
Taleb A., who has been in Germany since 2006 and lived there for almost two decades, received permanent residency. No earlier criminal convictions or charges have been reported in connection with him. Authorities described him as not fitting the usual profile of extremists[2][4].
The motive for the attack is believed to be "dissatisfaction and frustration with the course and outcome of a civil law dispute and the failure of various criminal complaints," rather than ideological extremism[1][2]. He acted alone and planned the attack in detail over several weeks[1][2][5].
The incident claimed the lives of five women aged 45 to 75 and a nine-year-old boy. A total of 344 people were injured in the incident[1][2]. Taleb A. was not under the influence of alcohol during the incident.
The attack lasted one minute and four seconds, with the vehicle reaching speeds of up to 48 kilometers per hour. The suspect, who was responsible for the psychiatric care of criminals on three wards, has been transferred several times and is currently in custody[1][2].
A psychiatric evaluation has been ordered for the suspect to determine his criminal responsibility[1][2]. The General Prosecutor's Office in Naumburg has filed charges against Taleb A. The temporary structure for the court will be built on a state-owned plot of land in Magdeburg, with completion expected in September[1].
