Accomplishments of Peaceful Kazakhstan in its Years of Sovereignty: Exploring Key Achievements

In the heart of Central Asia, Kazakhstan has emerged as a shining example of progress and diplomatic prowess. After gaining independence just 29 years ago, the nation has transformed from a raw material appendage of the Soviet empire into a rapidly developing independent country recognised worldwide.

This remarkable transformation is evident in Kazakhstan's foreign policy achievements, which extend beyond traditional multilateral leadership roles. The country has demonstrated a knack for practical regional cooperation, diplomacy, and strategic initiatives that bolster its influence and stability in Central Asia and beyond.

One notable achievement is Kazakhstan's leadership in water diplomacy. The nation spearheaded a joint initiative with Uzbekistan to automate hydrological stations along the Syr Darya River, promoting transparency and efficiency in shared water resource management. Furthermore, Kazakhstan adopted a new Water Code, reflecting a long-term commitment to regional water diplomacy and security.

Under President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Kazakhstan's international relations have strengthened significantly. Tokayev has held high-level meetings with leaders from Russia, China, South Korea, and Uzbekistan, prioritising political restructuring, economic modernization, and a balanced multi-vector foreign policy. To further enhance Kazakhstan’s humanitarian diplomacy, climate initiatives, and promotion of key foreign policy goals, Tokayev created the Special Representative for International Cooperation.

Kazakhstan has also made strides in strengthening regional security architecture. Tokayev proposed transforming the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) into a full-fledged international organization, underscoring the continent's emerging global importance.

The nation also values close cooperation with Türkiye and the Organization of Turkic States, working together to promote global stability and security. Kazakhstan emphasises developing the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (Middle Corridor) to bolster Eurasian connectivity, enhancing trade and logistics integration.

Kazakhstan's diplomatic outreach to the Taliban Government is another significant achievement. By agreeing to accept a Taliban ambassador, Kazakhstan has facilitated the Taliban’s outreach and engagement with regional powers, underscoring its role in regional diplomacy and maintaining balanced relations amid complex geopolitical dynamics.

Kazakhstan enjoys trust and respect, as evidenced by the United States being the first to recognise its independence and the subsequent mutual successes in cooperation. The United States Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to the Republic of Kazakhstan, William Moser, noted that Kazakhstan did an excellent job during its tenure on the UN Security Council.

Amid a severe shortage of professional personnel and the lack of a foreign policy department at the dawn of independence, Kazakhstan developed much faster than expected. Yerlan Abil, rector of the Academy of Public Administration under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, stated that Kazakhstan had to build new legislative, judicial, and executive branches of power, which was accompanied by a crisis. Despite these challenges, Kazakhstan has made significant decisions and facilitated negotiations for resolving armed conflicts on its platforms, sending peacekeepers to support peace in various conflict zones.

In conclusion, Kazakhstan's foreign policy achievements are a testament to the nation's resilience, vision, and commitment to peace and progress. The country's strategic initiatives and diplomatic efforts serve as a beacon of hope for a stable and prosperous Central Asia and a model for other nations to emulate.
