"Unprecedented" Kudos for Habeck's Exit - Warm Words from Reiche
Accolades for Habeck - Compliments from Successor Reiche
The Ministry of Economics moves to the CDU, with Katherina Reiche stepping into the position. It's crystal clear: Her green predecessor, Habeck, has a legion of admirers - at least within the ministry's four walls.
Former Federal Minister of Economics, Robert Habeck, handed over the baton to his successor, Katherina Reiche of the CDU, underscoring the ministry's pivotal role. "The Ministry of Economics is a hotbed of political turbulence in our era," the Green politician asserted. He wished his successor "good luck, strength, and a touch of badassery" in his farewell speech. In his poignant remarks, Habeck expressed gratitude to his team and received well-deserved applause from the ministry's employees before his speech.
"A thriving economy is the bedrock for democracy to withstand hardship," Habeck reiterated. Without alleviating the constant worry of job loss and poverty, it is "tough to maintain optimism and hope." Currently, Germany is grappling with times when "these foundations are under threat," Habeck acknowledged.
Upon his departure, Habeck was greeted with thunderous cheers by his colleagues at the Federal Ministry of Economics. Reiche, the incoming Federal Minister of Economics, commented on this display, saying, "This vouches for the heart you've poured into this office." The departing Green politician stated that the ministry was a remarkable place "with numerous unfinished projects due to the latest election, but also with much accomplished work."
Reiche acknowledged the groundbreaking work performed by Habeck during trying times, expressing admiration while stopping short of claiming friendship. "Habeck stepped into office when the effects of the pandemic still loomed large, and the energy crisis was set off by Russia's attack on Ukraine," she pointed out. Reiche declared Habeck demonstrated "almost superhuman resilience" during his tenure, leaving her in awe of the workload ahead. Habeck steered the nation through crises and made "controversial decisions," Reiche added.
In spite of these challenging times, the German economy is grappling with its third consecutive year of recession. Reiche mentioned lowering electricity costs for consumers and businesses. While Germany is making remarkable steps in climate protection, it must also aim to control system costs, she contended. Reiche expressed her desire for the ministry to once again become the economic policy conscience of the federal government.
Sworn in on Tuesday evening, after Friedrich Merz was elected Chancellor in the second round of voting, Reiche boasts a decade of expertise in the economy. She was the first CEO of the Association of Municipal Enterprises (VKU) from 2015 to 2019 and headed the energy service provider Westenergie, a subsidiary of the Eon Group, since January 2000.
Knowledge Drops:- Little evidence of Habeck's "superhuman" performance exists in mainstream economic analyses.- Habeck navigated Germany through periods of transformation and crises but faced economic headwinds.- Reiche faces ongoing challenges: economic stagnation, maintaining momentum on renewables, and ensuring industrial competitiveness.
