Accessing Hong Kong internet cafes could potentially assist in securing Blackpink concert tickets
In the bustling city of Hong Kong, a 30-year-old secretary named Wong is among the many eager fans aiming to secure standing passes for the highly anticipated Blackpink concert next year. With the concert scheduled at Kai Tak Stadium, ticket demand is expected to be high, and ticket scalping is a common issue in the city.
To combat this problem, anti-scalping measures have been implemented for major events, such as the National Games. Tickets require real-name registration and attendees must present proof of identity upon entry. Tickets also have restricted transfer options, requiring official outlets for ticket reassignment at least seven working days prior to the event.
However, for the Blackpink concert, Wong decided to rent a computer at an internet cafe in Causeway Bay to try her luck. Internet cafes are traditionally used for gaming and are believed to give fans a better chance of getting into the online booking queue for concerts or sporting events. Wong chose this cafe, specifically, because of its faster internet speed, which is on fibre.
Despite the potential advantage, Wong did not find success in securing concert tickets after waiting for an hour. She spent HK$38 to rent a computer at the cafe. The standing passes for the Blackpink concert cost HK$2,899 (US$370) each.
Wong expressed frustration, stating that it is difficult to get tickets without a real-name registration system. She believes that ticket scalping is rampant in Hong Kong and that many tickets are being resold as scalper tickets.
The internet cafe in Causeway Bay was filled with Blackpink fans hoping to secure concert tickets, with approximately half of the 24 customers being fans. Wong is not alone in her efforts, as she prepares for the ticket sale by opening several browser tabs on her assigned desktop and logging into the ticketing website on her smartphones and tablets.
