Xhaka on the Move? AC Milan Eyes veteran Midfielder as Leverkusen Balks

AC Milan secretly cultivated a remarkable midfield duo, dubbed as "Altherren."

Hang on to your seats, football fans! Rumors are swirling about a potential transfer that could shake up the Bundesliga as Granit Xhaka is eyed by AC Milan. But, Leverkusen isn't giving up their star midfielder without a fight.

According to a report in the Italian newspaper "Gazzetta dello Sport," Xhaka is on AC Milan's shopping list, and the Swiss international himself is reportedly interested in a move to Lombardy. The clubs are rumored to start transfer negotiations as early as this week. Xhaka's contract with Leverkusen runs until June 30, 2028.

To pressure the price, AC Milan has indicated its interest in defending Malick Thiaw as part of the transfer. Thiaw, a three-time German international, joined AC Milan last season from Schalke 04 and played in 22 league games. In Leverkusen, Thiaw could replace Jonathan Tah, who moved to FC Bayern Munich on a free transfer.

Milan's Big Midfield Move

If the transfer happens, Xhaka might be lining up alongside Luka Modric in AC Milan's midfield. The Italian club is reportedly keen on signing the experienced Real Madrid pro, who is currently with the Spanish record champions at the Club World Cup. The signing of Modric is expected soon.

Leverkusen has already seen head coach Xabi Alonso, defensive chief Jonathan Tah, and winger Jeremie Frimpong depart, with the transfer of exceptional talent Florian Wirtz to FC Liverpool imminent. Xhaka has called the departures a "big loss."

While Xhaka has expressed uncertainty about his long-term future at the club, he has stated that as of today, he remains at Leverkusen. "It costs a lot of energy. And I'm not 25 anymore, I'll be 33 in September," said Xhaka. He believes that new coach Erik ten Hag will find good solutions for the roster, but whether he is a part of that remains to be seen.

What's the Real Deal?

Xhaka's desire for a fresh challenge in Serie A and AC Milan's formal offer of around €10 million, including bonuses, have heated up negotiations. However, Leverkusen's reluctance to sell has complicated matters. The club is hoping to find a solution that could involve a swap deal with AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw. The two clubs are set to have talks next week to finalize the terms of the potential transfer.
