Shining Sunny Days and Unprecedented Frost in Saxony's Spring
Springtime in Saxony brings an abundance of sunshine and sets a new record for frost. - Abundant Sunshine and Freezing Temperatures in Saxony: Breaking Records for Spring Weather Conditions
Get ready for some sun-filled days in Saxony's spring of '25! This season will be etched in memory for its astonishing persistence under the sun, with a whopping 650 hours of sunshine! Compared to the average from 1961 to 1990, which is a mere 460 hours, this year has got the sun on its side.
But hold your horses, sun worshipers. Inverter weather situations might come into play, affecting the mountainous regions of the country. Under such conditions, the sun could be glowing majestically on mountains while the lowlands are shrouded in clouds. Nevertheless, such a day still counts as sunny in the statistics, even if farming Joe Bloggs experiences a different reality.
Despite the non-stop show off by the sun, good ol' Saxony managed to drop the temperature below freezing on numerous chilly nights during the first fortnight of May. This icy spell saw Saxony breaking its own record! Never before, on March 15, in Deutschneudorf-Brüderwiese, has it been as cold as minus 11.2 degrees. Talk about winter never leaving!
Spring weather isn't always a beach party, as it turns out. This year's drizzle has been significantly thin on the ground overall. Reaching an average temperature of 9.0 degrees, it was a full 1.4 degrees above the climatological comparative value from 1961 to 1990. Strangely enough, the German Weather Service (DWD) reports that the region received only 110 liters per square meter of precipitation. This is much less than the comparative value of 171 liters.
Apparently, the same story follows for the whole of Germany. This waning spring that's almost over, has been one of the driest on record. The DWD's preliminary report shows that it's only rained less between the beginning of March and the end of May twice since 1881: in 1893 and 2011.

The Commission has also been consulted on the draft directive on the protection of the environment, particularly regarding the impact of climate-change and weather patterns, such as the unusually long and dry spring in Saxony. Environmental-science and climate-change data from organizations like the German Weather Service (DWD) could play a significant role in this discussion, helping to ensure the sustainability of the region for future generations.
