Absenteeism of Three Pro-Fubara Legislators at Rivers Assembly Session
Governor Siminalayi Fubara, associated with a faction within the Rivers State House of Assembly, faced a significant moment as the legislative body resumed sessions following the lifting of the state of emergency by President Bola Tinubu. The plenary session, held at the Assembly quarters, was presided over by Speaker Martin Amaewhule in the conference hall, located within the legislative quarters.
The Assembly complex, still undergoing reconstruction after an explosion on October 29, 2023, was not the only point of division. The House remains split into two distinct factions, a rift that has persisted for months and has yet to be fully resolved through the peace process initiated by the authorities.
Amidst the political turbulence, Governor Fubara was urged to prepare the budget and transmit the list of commissioners' nominees for screening and confirmation. The Governor, however, was not the only figure of interest during the session. The absence of three legislators, Victor Oko-Jumbo, Sokari Goodboy Sokari, and Adolphus Timothy Oruibienimigha, was notable, as they had been the only lawmakers standing by Governor Fubara during the political crisis.
The celebration ground outside the Government House was crowded on Thursday to welcome Governor Fubara following the end of the emergency rule. Two pro-Fubara lawmakers, Oko-Jumbo and Sokari, were seen at the celebration. Despite their absence from the plenary session, their support for the Governor was evident.
The plenary session marked a significant step forward in the governance of Rivers State. However, the underlying divisions within the House of Assembly and the ongoing reconstruction of the Assembly complex serve as reminders of the challenges that lie ahead. The peace process, while ongoing, has yet to fully bridge the gap between the two factions, ensuring that the political landscape in Rivers State remains dynamic and complex.
