The Austrian duo Abor & Tynna has stormed the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) scene with their catchy tune "Baller," but the limelight now casts a dark shadow on Abor's past. Old social media comments, allegedly made by Abor, have resurfaced, providing a less-than-rosy picture of the music star.

The charismatic duo, composed of Abor and his sister Tynna, managed a commendable 15th place for Germany in this year's ESC with their hit. The song has since soared up charts across various countries, even securing an English version.

Nevertheless, those times of triumphant celebration seem to be overshadowed by Amadeus-born Attila Bornemisza's (better known as Abor) problematic past. His old statements, viewed by many as homophobic and misogynistic, have come to light, prompting Abor to issue a public apology.

Facing a Tough Controversy

Screenshots of the polarizing comments quickly made rounds on Breach, a platform that hosted these posts on a TikTok or Reddit channel that no longer exists. Outraged internet users demanded Abor's cancelation, with one sarcastically urging, "Welcome to Tynna's Solo Career."

In response, Abor initially spoke up on Discord, expressing remorse for his past remarks, but denying any connection with the offensive Reddit content. "Some of the reposted TikTok messages are indeed mine, and I've already taken them down. I was quite edgy back then, and that's not a role model's place," he admitted.

However, Abor later confessed the reality on Instagram. "Recent posts and comments from my past have surfaced, deserving valid criticism. Many of these comments are years old, and I genuinely regret them. Claiming, out of shame, that the account wasn't mine was a mistake I deeply regret."

A Wake-up Call

He publicly apologized "sincerely and seriously" for the posts, acknowledging how his words may have hurt others. "I can't take back those words, but I assure you that looking back, I would never say such things, as they don't align with who I am today," Abor wrote.

Tynna, Abor's sister, also voiced her support to her brother on Instagram. "I, as Abor's sister, stand by him. I didn't know about the posts and comments. They aren't my views, but I support him in taking responsibility," she said. "I hope this moment can foster some real growth."

In the end, Abor's wish for forgiveness rests on each fan's shoulders: "Whether you can forgive me is your choice."

Food for Thought:

  • Online controversies can quickly engulf successful artists, often revealing their controversial past statements.
  • Public apologies and acknowledgement of past transgressions is a common path towards rebuilding trust among fans.

The Commission has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers in the entertainment industry, considering the rising controversies and public scrutiny that have exposed inappropriate comments made by celebrities in the past. In the context of pop-culture, it is apparent that celebrities, even those enjoying success, must be mindful of their online presence and the impact of their words, as they can potentially tarnish their image and reputation.
