Contemporary Combat: Governors' Sparring Match!

Abia Governor, Alex Otti, confronted over LP crisis by Abure, accusing him of triggering internal disputes.

In a heated exchange, the National Chair of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, has taken a swipe at Abia State Governor Alex Otti. According to our source, the clash took place during an intense meeting of the LP's National Executive Committee held at their Abuja headquarters.

Abure's response was a direct counterswing to Otti's earlier appearance on Arise Television's Morning Show, where he aired allegations. Otti had claimed that the party had been regained from Abure, who he accused of being in denial about relinquishing power. He went as far as comparing Abure's claims to self-pleasure, stating that Abure was "masturbating" over still being in charge.

In a bold retort, on May 2, Abure asserted that Otti owes his political success to the Labour Party and its leadership. He continued, "With all due respect, we made him, Governor Alex Otti. We supported him, made sacrifices, and stood by him so he could become the leader he is today."

Abure further criticized Otti for misrepresenting a Supreme Court ruling on party leadership matters and for his choice of language, referring to Otti as a "jester." He expressed his disappointment over Otti aligning himself with dissident party members in presenting the court ruling to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Abure argued that the Supreme Court's decision explicitly recognized internal party leadership matters as governed by the party's constitution. He continued, "It is disgraceful to see a whole governor reduce himself to carrying the Supreme Court CTC, thinking he could intimidate and harass INEC."

Abure concluded by stating that Otti does not embody the values of the Labour Party and reminded the public of their promises to produce leaders who would usher in a new era for Nigeria.

Interestingly, Governor Otti, a former banker, assumed office in 2023 after clinching the gubernatorial election. His administration focuses on economic development, infrastructure revitalization, and phasing out massive debt inherited from previous administrations. His notable initiatives include partnerships with Israeli agricultural investors and prioritizing youth and women's empowerment programs.

Otti remains committed to the Labour Party, as evidenced by his recent reaffirmation. However, no explicit collaboration or conflict between Otti and Abure has been documented as of yet.
