ABC temporarily suspends live broadcast of 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' following controversial commentary by the late-night host about Charlie Kirk
Jimmy Kimmel, the popular host of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!", has found himself in the midst of a political controversy. The late-night comedy series, which is a part of ABC's schedule, has been temporarily removed due to Kimmel's comments regarding the death of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.
The shooting of Kirk occurred one week prior on September 10 in Utah. During a monologue on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!", Kimmel made a reference to Kirk's murder, which has been criticized for characterizing the murderer as one of the MAGA gang.
FCC chair Brandon Carr has been vocal in his criticism of Kimmel's comments. Carr believes that these remarks played into the narrative that the murder of Kirk was MAGA or Republican-motivated. He stated that broadcasters have an obligation to operate in the public interest, and failure to do so may lead to additional work for the FCC.
Carr's suggestion was made during an episode of YouTuber Benny Johnson's The Benny Show posted on September 17. It's uncertain if any action has been taken against Kimmel by ABC or the FCC.
Nexstar Media Group, one of the largest owners of ABC affiliates across the U.S., has decided not to air "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" temporarily due to Kimmel's comments.
Despite the controversy, negotiations are underway between Jimmy Kimmel and Disney and ABC to potentially return "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" to ABC after its indefinite removal. However, as of now, no new broadcaster or platform has been confirmed for future airing.
Kimmel has been outspoken on political issues in the past, and this is not the first time he has found himself in the middle of a political storm. The future of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" remains uncertain, but fans of the show will be hoping for a swift resolution to the current controversy.
