On Wednesday, May 21st, an IndiGo Airbus A321-251NX, flight 6E 2142 from Delhi to Srinagar, encountered a sudden and severe hailstorm during its descent. The aircraft's nose cone took a beating, yet the pilot managing to steer the plane safely to a landing at Srinagar Airport with all 184 passengers and crew unharmed.
IndiGo's official statement shared, "The flight crew diligently adhered to established protocols, enabling the aircraft to land securely in Srinagar. Post-landing, the Srinagar airport team prioritized the well-being and comfort of our passengers."
Leaked images seem to corroborate the extent of the hailstorm's battering, with extensive damage to the airplane's radome. Whilst such impact typically doesn't compromise the aircraft's structure, immediate inspections and maintenance are vital before the plane can return to service.
IndiGo confirmed the aircraft's scheduled maintenance and inspections, emphasizing on the safety of its passengers and crew first and foremost.
Flight operations in unpredictable weather conditions like hailstorms pose considerable challenges, especially towards the end of the flight with reduced flexibility for diversion. Aviation safety analysts stress the importance of crew training, following protocols, and swift reaction to ensure safe outcomes.
Despite the incident, Srinagar Airport sustained no further delays or disruptions.
