A2A commits to a €3.8 billion investment in Lombardy's electrical infrastructures over the next decade.
In a significant move towards Italy's energy transition and circular economy, A2A, a major energy operator, has announced a strategic investment plan worth €22 billion by 2035. This plan, focusing on electrification and expanding renewable energy capacity to 5.7 GW, aims to serve over 5 million customers and prioritises sustainable value, decarbonization, innovation, and Italy’s energy autonomy [1][3].
A substantial portion of this investment is earmarked for enhancing and modernising the electricity distribution networks and infrastructure in key urban centres, including Milan and Brescia. In the Salò area, there are currently 13 primary cabins and nearly 1,300 secondary ones, with plans to add more [2]. In the Brescia territory, a new primary cabinet (Vobarno) is scheduled to be inaugurated at the end of 2023, and two new primary cabinets (Mugello and Comasina) are set to be added in Milan in 2025, aiming to reach 22 by 2035 [2].
The investment and expansion will allow A2A to create operational synergies and be more efficient. In Milan, Unareti has carried out interventions on medium-voltage networks totalling around 500 km, including development activities to connect new primary cabinets and rationalise the existing network, as well as renewal activities to replace entire sections [4]. A2A will invest €1.8 billion in Milan and Rozzano, with approximately 80 new secondary cabinets installed and put into service each year in Milan [5].
In the province of Brescia, there are 10 primary cabins and approximately 1,450 secondary ones. A2A will invest €600 million in 46 Brescia municipalities through Unareti, with A2A, through Unareti and Duereti, investing over 800 million euros in electrical networks in the Brescia territory over the next 10 years [6]. Among the planned interventions in the Brescia territory are the renewal of meters and network maintenance [2].
The city of Milan has over 6,000 secondary cabinets and 7,300 km of underground cables in its electrical network. A2A will also invest an additional €1.4 billion for municipalities in the Milan and Brescia hinterland, as part of A2A's strategic plan up to 2035 [2]. Lorenzo Giussani, Director of Strategy and Growth at A2A, comments that the regulated value of A2A's electricity distribution assets will reach €3.5 billion [2].
This comprehensive investment plan drives the development of electrification and electricity distribution networks in these key urban centres, positioning A2A as a leading national energy operator engaged in the clean energy transition [1][3].

The strategic investment plan by A2A worth €22 billion by 2035 includes allocations for enhancing electricity distribution networks and infrastructure in key urban centres. In Milan, A2A will invest €1.8 billion, which includes the installation of approximately 80 new secondary cabinets each year.
A2A's investments in Milan and Brescia are aimed at improving the infrastructure for both electrification and sports, as the city of Milan has over 6,000 secondary cabinets and 7,300 km of underground cables in its electrical network, a considerable setup for the distribution of electricity and a possible hub for sports training facilities or events.
