Frost Damage - A24 Fully Closed for Repairs - A24 Motorway Shuts Down for Urgent Frost Damage and Bridge Repairs

A 17-kilometre stretch of the A24 motorway in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will shut down completely on Wednesday, March 15. The closure, affecting both directions between the Hagenow and Wöbbelin exits, runs from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM due to urgent frost damage repairs and bridge construction.

Recent freezing conditions have left the road surface riddled with potholes, forcing immediate action. Crews will also repaint faded lane markings in the same area during the closure. A signed detour will guide drivers around the affected section.

This part of the A24 has already faced repeated full closures this year. Two major bridge replacement projects have caused ongoing disruptions since January, with traffic squeezed into single lanes in each direction. The heavy strain on the reduced lanes has worsened the road's condition.

The current phase of bridge construction—including demolition, foundation building, and installing new steel beams—began in 2024. While the latest repairs aim to address immediate safety concerns, the full bridge project will continue until the end of 2026. However, the ongoing lane restrictions at the construction zones are expected to ease by the end of June.

Drivers should plan for delays or alternative routes during the six-hour closure. The repairs aim to restore safe conditions on a stretch already under pressure from long-term construction. Further updates on the bridge construction project's progress are expected in the coming months.
