Another year, another pause, another deep breath—2022 has left quite an impression. I can't help but reflect on its turbulence as we approach its end. Just like 2020 and 2021, this year has been an emotional rollercoaster. The coronavirus continued its relentless run, claiming at least seven million lives globally. Not too long ago, Russia's invasion of Ukraine shook the world to its core, transforming an already unstable situation into a seemingly endless conflict.

But before we dive into the somberness of it all, let me remind you: horror doesn't always wear the cloak of darkness. 2022 has also been the stage for acts of resilience and hope. In October, Hamas' barbaric attacks on Israel claimed countless lives of innocent Jews, evoking sympathy and solidarity from around the world. However, the tragedy has also served as a grim reminder of the rise of anti-Semitism, now openly breaking out in numerous places, including Germany, where some Jews fear to reveal their faith.

Fortunately, not all is bleak. In a year laden with challenges, we've witnessed moments of triumph. Policymakers have tackled tasks more efficiently than anticipated, improving our collective atmosphere. Our economy has started to regain its footing, and while we're not out of the woods, inflation rates are on a downward spiral.

Turning our gaze to the challenges ahead, we know 2024 will be a test of our resolve. As we face this next chapter, let's cling to our confidence and determination. And as we look back on 2023 with this very publication, you'll see that there has been light amidst the shadow—moments of joy, hope, and resilience.

For the full story, look no further:

The UN has urged Israel to ceasefire, in response to the brutal attacks by Hamas, which resulted in the death of numerous Jews and sparking fear among Jewish communities worldwide. Meanwhile, Germany's Defense Minister, Boris Pistorius, has emphasized the need for the country to become "war-ready," acknowledging the challenges facing the nation and its often critically acclaimed army.

Despite the global struggles, Stern's message for the new year is one of hope and optimism, highlighting achievements and enhanced circumstances in various areas such as the economy and inflation rates. The optimism may well be needed as 2024 is likely to bring its own set of challenges.
