Exploring the Himalayan Suspension Bridges of Lake Monteynard-Avignonet

Nestled in the picturesque French region of Isère, the Himalayan suspension bridges hike at Lake Monteynard-Avignonet offers an unforgettable adventure for nature lovers and hikers of all levels. This unique trail, opened to the public in 2008, has become one of the most frequented sites in the region, attracting visitors with its combination of nature, adventure, and breathtaking panoramas.

The hike begins with a 30-minute guided boat ride across the turquoise waters of Lake Monteynard-Avignonet, transporting you to the opposite shore from Treffort or Mayres-Savel. From there, you embark on a loop trail surrounding the lake, which culminates in crossing two spectacular suspension bridges: the Drac Bridge (220 meters long) and the Ebron Bridge (180 meters long). Soaring approximately 80 meters above the water, these bridges provide an unforgettable moment between heaven and earth.

The trail offers a Mediterranean-like atmosphere, with cicadas singing in the background and stunning turquoise waters reflecting the Alpine scenery. Along the way, you'll find picnic spots and dry toilets, making it a perfect destination for a leisurely day out.

The Drac Bridge, in particular, is one of the most impressive bridges in this hike. It offers a breathtaking view that combines the lake's tranquility with the towering mountains in the distance.

To ensure a comfortable and enjoyable hike, it is recommended to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, a hat, and a light jacket. Flip-flops are not suitable for the hike, as sturdy footwear is necessary for potentially uneven or slippery paths. The trail can be slippery and muddy in wet weather due to the natural terrain, so wear appropriate footwear to navigate the path safely.

The boat service from La Mira typically runs from May 1 to September 30 (depending on water level), making it a convenient destination for nature lovers and sports enthusiasts. Access to the Himalayan bridges is free, but parking is payable from May to October. A boat crossing of Lake Monteynard-Avignonet is available for 8€, with an average duration of 30 minutes.

The project took several years to come to fruition, primarily due to the necessary funding. The idea for the Himalayan suspension bridges originated in 1990 from the president of the SIVOM, who was inspired by his memories of scouting adventures in France. The construction of the bridges was part of an audacious project imagined by the president of the SIVOM in 1990.

For those seeking a shorter hike, a route to the Ebron Bridge is possible, with parking available at the Les Vignes parking lot on the Treffort side. This option allows you to experience the thrill of the suspension bridges without committing to the full 4-hour, 30-minute hike.

Regardless of the length of your hike, the Himalayan suspension bridges hike at Lake Monteynard-Avignonet promises an unforgettable experience that combines Alpine scenery with an almost Mediterranean feel. So, pack your bags and prepare for an adventure in the heart of France!
