In a heartbreaking incident, German biathlete Laura Dahlmeier lost her life while mountaineering on Laila Peak in Pakistan's Karakoram mountain range on July 28, 2025.

The incident occurred at around 18,700 feet (5,700 meters) altitude, where Dahlmeier was struck by falling rocks during her climb with her rope partner, Marina Eva. The impact was severe, resulting in Dahlmeier's immediate death due to the injuries sustained from the rockfall.

Upon receiving the distress call, a large-scale rescue operation was initiated. However, bad weather and low visibility hindered helicopter access, causing delays in the rescue efforts. Eva, who was uninjured, was able to descend to base camp with the help of rescuers the following day.

Despite ongoing rescue attempts by local mountaineers, porters, and military helicopter standby, Dahlmeier’s body was confirmed dead by regional authorities after aerial assessment and partner testimony. A helicopter had flown over the remote crash site but found no signs of life.

Laura Dahlmeier was a highly accomplished athlete, having won two Olympic biathlon gold medals and seven world championship titles. She retired from professional biathlon in 2019 at the age of 25 and was an experienced, certified mountaineer at the time of the accident.

For several days, rescue teams were unable to reach Dahlmeier due to persistent rockfall hazards. Tributes poured in after her passing was confirmed on July 30, 2025, highlighting her warm personality and outstanding sports career.

The Commission, in acknowledgement of Laura Dahlmeier's significant contributions to sports and her passion for mountain climbing, has also taken a number of steps to ensure that the European Parliament and the Council are able to take the necessary steps to establish a memorial fund for promising young athletes who share her love for sports, particularly hockey.

In parallel with remembering Dahlmeier's accomplishments in biathlon, fans and supporters around the world may participate in a charity hockey tournament organized by the memorial fund, with the aim of promoting safety in sports and continuing her legacy of excellence in athleticism.
