Think Different: Christian Dürr Plans a Modern FDP Revolution

"A transformative declaration from within"

In an exclusive chat, the potential new FDP chief, Christian Dürr, lays out his progressive vision for the German party. Gone are the days of political stagnation; Dürr plans to shake things up and reinvent the FDP, addressing contemporary issues with a bold, innovative strategy.

ntv.de: Mr. Dürr, fresh off the chancellor election, were you disappointed by Merz's failure?

Christian Dürr: This isn't about sympathy. My concern is for a functioning government. I worry that this government may not be stable, as there's a lack of true unity. I fear that the coalition agreement isn't sustainable.

The FDP is eager to remain modern and future-proof. Since your departure from the Bundestag in March, what have you been up to?

I've been busy networking, both within and outside the FDP, to understand our future mission and determine my role as a potential party leader.

What conclusions have you reached?

One result is my proposal for the position of general secretary, Nicole Büttner. She's an AI entrepreneur - an unconventional, yet necessary addition to our team. We must venture into unfamiliar territory, pushing German politics forward. People demand change - and that certainly applies to the parties.

But aren't you an established FDP face, having been a parliamentary group leader? Doesn't that contradict the need for change?

We need a balance of veteran voices and new perspectives. I, too, must adapt. To drive innovation, we've got to bring in fresh blood, while keeping the experienced members. Redefining the FDP, one bold move at a time.

As the FDP gathers this weekend, what message should the conference send: "We're still alive" or "Don't forget us"?

Our message should be loud and clear: "You can rely on the Free Democrats." We aim to become Germany's most tech-savvy and forward-thinking party, addressing the mounting concerns of a nation that seems to be sliding backwards.

What's the state of the German economy, and how does the FDP plan to turn things around?

We all agree on the primary goal - economic growth. But it's the strategies that matter. The CDU/CSU and SPD have asserted economic growth as their top priority. However, we at the FDP support the right policies, challenging the status quo with new ideas and courageous reforms.

So, the FDP still stands by its traditional policy of tax cuts?

Lowering taxes isn't an end in itself. Our goal is to strike a balance between lowering taxes and minimizing social security contributions, ensuring that people keep more of their hard-earned money in their pockets. The current government has no feasible plan for this - just more of the same.

The SPD and CDU/CSU have both promised to lower electricity prices. What's the FDP's alternative?

We're all for lower electricity prices. But subsidizing electricity through the federal budget is short-sighted and lacks a long-term plan. Instead, we advocate for a smarter energy policy, focusing on efficiency and renewable sources. If we regulate less and allow the market to drive innovation, we can achieve real, tangible results.

What about nuclear power? Many say we've moved beyond it. What's your stand on this?

I'm not opposed to nuclear power altogether. There's a need for open-mindedness when discussing alternative energy sources, including small reactors and nuclear fusion. In Germany, we've grown complacent, listing reasons why something won't work. It's time to buck that trend, to move forward and embrace new possibilities.

What about immigration policies? Are we becoming too lax, or do we need to attract more skilled workers?

I believe we should make it easier for individuals to come to Germany to work, rather than just to claim benefits. We've already made strides in this area with the skilled workers immigration law, and I see potential for much more.

Back to energy: Why is focusing on expanding renewable energy a bad idea?

Politicians need to stop micromanaging the renewable energy sector. While I supports the expansion of renewable energies, I believe in allowing the market to drive innovation and progress. Germany should stop regulating every detail of renewable energy projects. We could save hundreds of billions in the long run by allowing the free market to decide the best course of action.

In conclusion, what should voters expect from a Dürr-led FDP?

I promise a modern, dynamic FDP that addresses contemporary challenges head-on. We'll push for policies that encourage personal responsibility, hard work, and technological innovation. We'll tackle issues like climate change, migration, and the economy with boldness and foresight. It's time for a different kind of politics - politically engaged, forward-thinking, and dedicated to making a real, tangible difference for the average German citizen.
