Article:

In a survey conducted by Insa, commissioned by the AfD faction, a majority of Baden-Württemberg residents express doubts about the efficacy of knife ban zones in preventing knife attacks. The poll, obtained by the German Press Agency, revealed that 62% of respondents believe these zones are not a sustainable solution for addressing knife violence.

Specifically, 31% believe the zones are entirely ineffective, while an additional 31% believe they are only marginally helpful. In contrast, only 13% of Baden-Württemberg residents hold the view that knife ban zones are genuinely effective in preventing such attacks.

Supporters of the AfD exhibit the most skepticism, with nearly 80% questioning the zones' ability to prevent attacks. Among supporters of the Green Party, only 49% share this view.

Despite these doubts, knife attacks in public spaces in Baden-Württemberg increased by 3.2% in 2024, according to the latest crime statistics. These incidents comprise approximately 1,300 cases, with around 40% involving threats, one-third causing dangerous bodily harm, 20% robberies, and 5% resulting in murder or manslaughter. The number of suspects in public knife attacks also increased by 7.3% in 2024.

Cities in the region have responded by establishing knife ban zones, prohibiting the carrying of weapons or knives in specific areas. Cities such as Mannheim, Stuttgart, Heilbronn, Heidelberg, and Ulm have introduced such zones. Under the German Weapons Act, it is already forbidden to carry shotguns, imitation weapons, bludgeons, stabbing weapons, or electroshockers.

In addition, Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU) proposed a ban on carrying knives or other weapons on buses and trains in Baden-Württemberg in April.

As the debate over the effectiveness of knife ban zones continues, alternative strategies are being explored, including community-based initiatives such as education and awareness programs, community engagement, and increased police presence in high-risk areas. Comparative studies from regions with similar policies could shed light on the challenges and successes of such measures.

  1. The survey commissioned by the AfD faction indicates that politics surrounding the implementation of employment policies, such as those addressing community safety, may require reevaluation, given the skepticism expressed by Baden-Württemberg residents towards knife ban zones.
  2. Amidst increasing concerns about knife attacks and the debatable effectiveness of knife ban zones, general-news outlets and crime-and-justice sectors are focused on exploring alternative strategies, including community-based initiatives, to combat knife violence, with education and awareness programs, community engagement, and increased police presence in high-risk areas gaining traction.
