Struggling with literacy is a significant challenge faced by numerous individuals in Lower Saxony. This issue has been highlighted by the Science Ministry, particularly as International Literacy Day approaches on September 8. In fact, approximately 620,000 adults aged 18 to 64 in Lower Saxony grapple with these writing and reading complications, often labeled as 'functional illiterates.'
Recognizing literacy as a crucial prerequisite for societal integration, the Science Ministry underlines its importance. During a Landtag meeting, Uwe Boldt, a member of the Learner Council in Lower Saxony, shared his daily experiences as an illiterate, aiming to raise awareness and educate Landtag members on the matter. Boldt emphasized the personal struggles and societal challenges faced by illiterates.
The Science Ministry expects to allocate 14.6 million euros to support programs for this cause. This includes 7 million euros from the EU's Social Fund and an additional 7.6 million euros in state funds.
Literacy is widely regarded as a vital foundation for societal integration. National initiatives such as the Media Literacy Initiatives, Safer Internet Day 2025, the National Youth Strategy, and Digital Education Initiatives like LEARNTEC 2025 contribute to this broader aim. These initiatives aim to improve media literacy, strengthen critical thinking skills, and support digital education, indirectly supporting those struggling with literacy.
However, even with these national efforts, regional initiatives tailored to the specific needs of Lower Saxony might be required for a more substantial impact.
