A Strange Steam Next Fest Demo, Fiendishly Designed, Leaves me Obsessively Replaying it, Instilling Frightening Comparisons to Five Nights at Freddy's.
In the realm of unique horror games, "You've Changed" stands out as a twisted take on the classic Spot The Difference genre. This game, currently in demo on Steam Next Fest, ratchets up the tension and sends shivers down your spine with some creepy twists and frightening elements.
Imagine this: instead of the usual task of finding differences between picturesque scenes, you're left hunting for evil anomalies that could send you jumping with fear. You'll receive jump scares, and your heart might just give out. Yeah, it's that intense.
The game's 8-bit MS Paint-style graphics lend it an eerie atmosphere, similar to cozy times, making the haunted perversion all the more unsettling. The lo-fi graphics, however, aren't just a throwback to an awesome aesthetic. They play a crucial role in helping you spot the exorcism-worthy alterations lurking in the corners of the rooms you're scouring.
A stopwatch allows you a short amount of time to familiarize yourself with the layout of each room. Toggling between single-screen views of each room, you'll need to pay close attention to every tiny detail. As you hunt for differences, the anomalies can creep in, and you'll need to spot them before they erode your heart (or give you a heart attack, whichever comes first). Some anomalies are subtle, like a missing dish, while others are much less so, such as a strange figure lurking in your shower.
Once you've discovered an anomaly, you'll need to quickly mark its type, such as mirror, extra, alteration, evil, or something else. Get it wrong, and it costs you precious seconds, increasing the tension and the chance of receiving a jump scare.
As of now, the jump scares have been relatively tame, but an adjustable toggle in the settings assures us they're present. A full release Story Mode may offer more of that heart-pounding action.
In the arcade mode demo, we're forced to start on Easy, but by the time we reach Normal, we're only scraping by. Here's hoping that with a bit more practice, we'll be able to face whatever horrors await us when the game releases, currently undated, on PC.
