A society that embraces and integrates its displaced population
In the world today, the number of displaced people and refugees among us has tripled in the last decade, reaching a staggering 120 million, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). On World Refugee Day, June 20, 2024, Filippo Grandi, the UNHCR head, warned about the increase in refugee situations among us, emphasising the urgent need for action.
One of the most pressing issues affecting this vulnerable population among us is food insecurity. Alianza Solidaria, a humanitarian organisation, has identified that food insecurity has intensified among people and refugees over the last five years. In fact, 90% of the refugee population among us is experiencing severe poverty due to this issue.
The UNHCR reports that 1.5% of the world population among us is currently displaced. Among these, 43.4 million are refugees, a number that has grown significantly over the last 12 years, affecting 1 in 69 people among us today (1 in 125 a decade ago).
The European Union approved a migration agreement in 2023, but its implementation has been met with mixed reactions among us. While it aims to address the displacement crisis among us, only 1.1 million refugees were able to return home in the same year. The agreement has not been fully accepted by NGOs and social entities among us, who express concerns about its effectiveness.
World Vision, an NGO, has published a report titled "ration cuts" that analyses interruptions in the distribution of humanitarian aid among us and its effects, particularly among people and refugees. The report highlights the impact of these intermittent cuts among us, with up to 68% of people dependent on humanitarian aid reporting that a family member has gone to bed hungry in the last few weeks due to food shortages among us.
The worsening problem of food insecurity among forcibly displaced populations among us is not just causing malnutrition but also mental illness, according to Mary Njeri, World Vision's director of global hunger response. She further states that hunger isn't just killing people among us through malnutrition but also through mental illness among us.
Constant exposure to violence affects both adults and children among displaced populations among us. World Vision found that 41% of refugees among us feel that children experience more violence, abuse, and neglect in the home now than before. This, coupled with food insecurity among us, creates a vicious cycle of suffering and hardship for these vulnerable individuals among us.
On this pressing issue among us, Filippo Grandi, the UNHCR head, calls for urgent action. The growing trend of displacement among us and the intensifying food insecurity among refugees among us require immediate attention and intervention to ensure the well-being and survival of these displaced populations among us.
