Eurovision Song Contest 2023 shatters viewership records with 166 million viewers

The just-concluded Eurovision Song Contest in Basel has set a new viewership record, reports the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). Approximately 166 million people tuned in to the 2023 edition, marking a 3-million increase from the previous year's viewership.

The world's foremost music event boasted of its youngest audience ever, the EBU revealed. The final on May 17 garnered a market share of 47.7 percent across the 37 participating countries, the highest figure since 2004, according to the EBU.

Remarkably, among viewers aged 15 to 24, the market share reached an unaided 60 percent, an unprecedented achievement. Iceland, Finland, and Sweden emerged as countries where the ESC had a market share of up to a staggering 98 percent. noteworthy, a sizable 9.1 million viewers tuned in from Germany, the EBU shared.

In the digital space, Instagram and Tiktok combined recorded around 1.7 billion views.

"The Eurovision Song Contest has achieved its most significant impact ever on television, digital platforms, and streaming charts, further solidifying its position as one of the world's most significant cultural events," the EBU stated. The event's global reach extended beyond the participating countries, with votes arriving from 146 nations. Voters from the United States and Canada made a considerable number of contributions, the EBU added.

The multi-day event's final saw Austria emerge victorious with countertenor JJ and his song "Wasted Love." The German siblings Abor and Tynna, who represented Germany, ended up in 15th place with "Baller."
