A revitalization in German literature is being spearheaded by female and non-binary authors hailing from diverse cultural backgrounds.
New Wave of Turkish and Middle Eastern Women Authors Shaping German Literature
A new generation of Turkish and Middle Eastern women authors is making a significant impact on the German literary scene. These writers are celebrated for their diverse perspectives and powerful storytelling, often reflecting their experiences as members of migrant communities in Germany.
Among these notable authors is Fatma Aydemir, a German-Kurdish author known for her poignant and thought-provoking writing. Her novel "Ellbögin" (Elbow), which won multiple literary prizes, was even adapted into a film in 2024.
Another author making waves is Ronya Othmann. Her semi-autobiographical novel "Die Sommers" (The Summers) addresses the genocide of the Yazidi minority by ISIS from a diaspora perspective. Othmann is not only an author but also a poet and journalist, currently working on her third book.
While not Turkish or Middle Eastern, Aria Aber's work also resonates with the trend of diverse voices in German literature. Aber, born in Münster to Afghan parents, studied in London and New York, and was a widely published poet before releasing her novel "Good Girl". This English-language debut has garnered rave reviews and was short-listed for the Women's Fiction Prize 2025.
Hengameh Yaghoobifarah, an Iranian-German writer, is known for her satirical and sometimes controversial column at the left-wing newspaper Die Tageszeitung. Yaghoobifarah identifies as non-binary and has written cult queer-feminist classics such as "Ministerium der Träume (Ministry of Dreams)" and "Schwindel", although these works have not yet been translated into English.
Nazlı Koca is a Turkish writer whose debut novel "The Applicant" tells the story of a Turkish twentysomething struggling to make ends meet by working as a cleaner in Berlin after failing her thesis and losing her student visa.
The rise of these authors is part of a broader movement in German literature, where women and non-binary writers from diverse backgrounds are gaining recognition and acclaim for their contributions to contemporary literature. A bookseller at She Said, a Berlin bookstore specializing in women, LGBTQI+, and authors of color writing in both English and German, believes this new generation of diverse German writers has opened up the market to alternative literary voices.
However, it's important to note that these novels do not necessarily represent the typical migrant experience. Critics argue that they are chosen by white-dominated publishing houses and their protagonists tend to be quite radical and empowered, criticizing and rebelling against their parents' cultures.
Despite this, the contributions of these authors serve as a testament to the richness and diversity of the German literary scene. However, the rise of anti-migrant rhetoric in Germany, with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) being second in the polls and anti-Muslim incidents rising by 60% in 2024, serves as a reminder that there is still much work to be done in fostering a truly inclusive and diverse literary landscape.
