A remnant of a drone's tail unearthed on Latvia's shore.
In recent developments, both Latvia and Poland have imposed flight restrictions on parts of their airspaces, following a series of incidents involving Russian drones.
The Polish government took the first step on September 10, when a mass violation of its airspace by Russian drones was registered in the early hours. This action was part of national security measures, as confirmed by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
Following suit, the Latvian government implemented flight restrictions on its eastern border with Russia and Belarus starting September 11, 2025. Minister of Defense of Latvia Andris Sprūds confirmed that the debris found on the beach of Vārve in the Ventspils region, which was later identified as a fragment of a Russian drone, was the reason for these restrictions.
The Russian Ministry of Defense expressed readiness for consultations with Polish colleagues to clarify the circumstances of the drone incident. However, no new information was provided about the status of the airspace restrictions in Latvia or any response from the Ukrainian government regarding the Russian embassy's statement about the Ukrainian leadership's capability to direct drones towards Poland.
It is worth noting that military exercises "Namejs 2025" are taking place throughout Latvia from September 2 to October 8, involving around 12,000 Latvian and allied soldiers and servicemen. During the Russian-Belarusian military exercises "Zapad-2025" on September 12, Latvia and Estonia partially closed their airspace.
The Latvian Armed Forces press service reported the drone discovery on social network X, and a group for neutralizing unexploded ammunition was sent to the scene to analyze the discovered drone. No new information was provided about the analysis of the drone debris found in Latvia.
The Russian Ministry of Defense, on the other hand, stated that it has no plans to strike Polish territory. This comes after the Ministry's statement that the Ukrainian leadership has the capability to direct drones towards Poland "under a false flag".
The news source for the flight restrictions information is rbc.group. The location of the drone discovery is in the west of Latvia, and the flight restrictions were initially set until September 18, but have been extended to October 8.
These developments highlight the ongoing tension in the region and the need for vigilance and cooperation among neighbouring countries in ensuring their national security.
