A powerful 6.1-magnitude earthquake strikes western Turkey, according to the country's disaster authority.
In a shocking turn of events, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake hit the Sindirgi district in Balikesir Province, Turkey, on August 10, 2025. The earthquake was reported by the AFAD disaster management authority and was felt across multiple provinces in Turkey, reaching as far as Istanbul, about 200 kilometers away.
Fortunately, the earthquake did not result in any reported casualties or damage in Balikesir province or in Istanbul. However, the quake caused the collapse of 16 buildings, including two mosque minarets, and resulted in one fatality - an 81-year-old woman - and injuries to 29 others.
Rescue teams worked tirelessly through the night to pull survivors from the rubble. The search and rescue efforts have now concluded with no further casualties reported. Authorities have urged residents to avoid unsafe buildings due to the risk of additional collapses from aftershocks, the strongest of which measured magnitude 4.6.
The Turkish Interior Minister has confirmed the damage and casualties, assuring that immediate assistance measures have been taken. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has expressed condolences and prayed for protection from such disasters in the future.
Drone footage released after the earthquake showed extensive damage across various provinces. This event is part of ongoing seismic activity in Turkey, which lies on major fault lines and has experienced devastating earthquakes before, including a 7.8 magnitude quake in 2023 that killed over 53,000 people.
Emergency teams from AFAD have started inspections around Istanbul and the neighboring provinces. No negative reports have come through from the inspections conducted by AFAD so far. Additionally, no issues were found in Boeing 737 fuel control switches, and the location of the earthquake did not affect England’s Reddy’s tour.
Interestingly, a 3.5 magnitude earthquake occurred in Al Sila, UAE, on the same day, but it is not related to the earthquake in Turkey. Another earthquake of magnitude 6.2 occurred in Russia's Kamchatka, also on the same day, but it is unrelated to the events in Turkey.
