A popular pub chain, Wetherspoons, has revealed intentions to expand its business by establishing 15 new outlets. Could a new venue be popping up in the area you reside in?
Wetherspoons on a Roll: 15 New Pubs on the Horizon
The boozer behemoth, Wetherspoons, is prepped to surge ahead with 15 fresh locations hitting the scene soon. This move comes after a boom in sales, with an impressive 5.6% rise in like-for-like purchases within the last 3 months.
So far this year, Wetherspoons has already unveiled a couple of new pubs, and they're not about to slow down. They've locked in plans to expand even further, with six locations already confirmed, and around nine more set to open by July 2026.
Kicking off this summer bonanza is The Conister Arms in Douglas, Isle of Man, opening on May 14. Next up, Walham Green at Fulham Broadway, South West London, will welcome patrons on June 17. The Dictum of Kenilworth in Warwickshire will follow suit on July 30, while The Sun Wharf on Tooley Street near London Bridge will open its doors on August 26. The King of Essex in Basildon will open its doors on September 23.
Later in the summer, a new pub in Merchant Square, Paddington, is expected to grace its presence, though the exact date is yet to be confirmed.
In the works for the next financial year are additional new pubs, including The Red Rocks at Devon Cliffs, The Humber Stone at Cleethorpes Beach in Lincolnshire, The London Stone at Kent Coast, and The Sir Thomas Haggerston at Haggerston Castle in Northumberland.
However, the road hasn't always been smooth sailing for Wetherspoons. As per recent updates from the British Beer and Pub Association, six pubs shutter their doors permanently every week. This grim trend led to the loss of 4500 jobs across England and Wales in 2024, with more closures expected in 2026 due to higher National Insurance contributions and minimum wage increases.
On the brighter side, perhaps buoyed by the upcoming openings, Wetherspoons expects a "reasonable" full-year result. Chairman Tim Martin has stated that the company's aim is to continuously enhance its appeal for both staff and customers, with plans to invest in staff facilities and evolve their product offerings. Keep an eye out for a new 'gourmet' food range launching on May 14.
Worth Noting:JD Wetherspoon is gearing up to make waves on the Isle of Man with its debut outlet, marking a significant expansion for the chain[1]. However, pending overwhelming success, financial challenges might impact future expansion plans due to increased wage and National Insurance Contribution (NIC) rates[3]. As always, it's best to keep a close eye on Wetherspoons' official announcements or their website for the latest news on new openings and updates.
