A 59-year-old Greek bloke, born in Georgia, is charged with espionage
A NATO accuses a Greek individual of clandestine surveillance of their military operations, resulting in his apprehension and detainment awaiting trial proceedings.
The bloke, who will remain nameless, got slapped with espionage-related charges in Greece and is currently locked up until his trial. News broke out that the bloke was grabbing photos and videos of military operations going down at Alexandroupolis, a crucial port in northeastern Greece serving as a logistics hub for U.S. and NATO operations. This hub plays a significant role in supporting military equipment and personnel for Ukraine and NATO member states in Eastern Europe.
Greek law enforcement officials snagged the bloke in a joint operation with the National Intelligence Service on April 29th. According to them, the bloke was operating on behalf of someone else and sent the recordings to this person through an encrypted messaging app. No additional details were provided.
However, the bloke’s lawyer has a different story. He says his client never sent any classified information, and photos of the NATO operations had already been publicly disseminated through media outlets.
