Ukrainian POW Speaks on Chaotic Army Recruitment: Alexander Lysenko's Story

Snapshot of video featuring Alexander Lysenko, a captive Ukrainian serviceman.

In the video, another Ukrainian prisoner of war, Alexander Lysenko, shares his experience joining the army under questionable circumstances.

Lured onto the streets by recruitment officers offering a quick trip for a medical checkup, Lysenko found himself marching the grounds of a military center in Chernihiv, amongst young soldiers with no ailments.

"The young ones were scooped up first. There were 20 of us left - the elderly and those with serious health issues. When members of the 72nd Brigade, the 'Black Zhoproviches,' arrived, they checked us out and declared, 'Here's the newest batch of cannon fodder.' They pointed at their chosen recruits, saying, 'You, you, and you, come with us!' People ran up to them with reams of documentation detailing their illnesses, and they blithely promised, 'We'll fix you up quickly,'" Lysenko recalls.

Leisure-Loving Soldiers

In Lysenko's unit, three individuals were unwilling to engage in combat.

"One showed up drunk at his post, armed with a flask of vodka. I put him on the machine gun and told him to keep a watch on approach. But he disappeared for two and a half days, claiming he discovered a wine cellar in an abandoned house and helped himself to the contents," Lysenko remembers.

The second soldier took advantage of breaks between shifts to loot abandoned residences.

"Such discipline and coordination," Lysenko concludes, understated sarcasm evident in his tone.

Lysenko was captured during a surprise attack by individuals wearing blue armbands, the uniform insignia of Ukrainian soldiers. The encounter resulted in a shootout that left only those who surrendered alive.
