A Laborious Cinematic Journey: Novocaine's Intense FilmWhirl
Everyone's talking about the epic adventure that is Novocaine, a breath of fresh air in the world of cinema. This baby was born from the genius of screenwriter, Lars Jacobson, who crafted a unique character named Nathan Caine. He's your everyday man who's never been in a fight, but when the girl of his dreams is snatched, he transforms his uniqueness - an inability to feel pain - into an asset in his quest to save her.
In the heart-pumping thriller, Nathan finds himself trapped inside a bank during a robbery. Thematically, it's about the lengths we'll go for love, and it's a perfect example of a character willing to risk everything. As Jacobson puts it, "He can't feel anything, but once he feels something for Shelley, he wants to make sure he can feel it again."
Inspired by bank heist films like Dog Day Afternoon and Killing Zoe, Jacobson couldn't resist the idea of a high-stakes action flick set against the walls of a bank. He explains, "When you can take something familiar and add a unique twist, that's a fun thing to do in storytelling."
The film is a love story at its core, but it's also a tribute to the essence of action movies. Just like Bruce Willis' iconic blood-soaked t-shirt in Die Hard, by the end of Novocaine, our hero, Nate, is battered and bruised, but he's coming out on top despite the odds.
Next up, Jacobson's manager, Julian Rosenberg, pitched the idea to Matt Schwartz of Safehouse Pictures, who instantly fell in love. The team at Safehouse, along with producers Tory Tunnell, Joby Harold, and Drew Simon, immediately saw the film's potential. As Schwartz puts it, "It's unique, has an awesome high concept, but with a relatable, lovely, and sympathetic hero at the center of it. There were also great universal themes."
Soon, the search for the perfect directors began, and Dan Berk & Robert Olsen were chosen. Known for their signature tone, they were the dream team to bring Lars Jacobson's script to life. Berk and Olsen share, "It had a very sticky concept at the core of it, a guy who can't feel pain being thrust into this action movie is a protagonist you don't expect in that situation."
Originally they had Jack Quaid in mind for the role of Nate, our anti-action hero. Quaid, who had made a name for himself on The Boys, was the perfect fit, according to the directors. Berk says, "Jack is an atomic bomb of charisma, and there's nobody as likable as him."
In Novocaine, audiences can expect a blend of action, heart, and humor - a refreshing take on action films that's guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat. Trust us, you won't want to miss this one. Let the cinematic adventures begin!
