A Glimpse into the Evolution of the Art of Manliness

The popular podcast, The Art of Manliness (AoM), has announced a strategic shift in its approach, focusing on delivering high-quality, meaningful content rather than churning out episodes at a rapid pace. This change will see the podcast return to publishing one episode a week, allowing for deeper exploration into various aspects of a man's life.

The new direction aligns with a commitment to depth and substance rather than quantity. Topics such as fitness, philosophy, relationships, and productivity will be delved into more deeply, offering listeners a more enriching experience.

In addition to the podcast, the hosts are expanding the conversation beyond audio. They have launched a new Substack called Dying Breed, a platform for more reflective, long-form content that complements the podcast’s themes about traditional values, legacy, and purpose.

Dying Breed will serve as a space for the hosts to explore new territories in their writing, away from the constraints of the podcast format. Subscribers will have access to the archives of previously published Sunday Firesides, a thoughtful reflection each Sunday called Sunday Firesides, and a weekly longer-form article called Deep Dives.

The name and logo for Dying Breed were inspired by the Killers' song "Dying Breed." The Substack will discuss topics that don't get talked about as often as they deserve, aimed at an audience that appreciates and is interested in ideas and values that can seem increasingly rare, but shouldn't be lost without a fight.

The hosts are proud that AoM is still around and thriving, and have never sold out their principles or watered down their quality for the sake of clicks and downloads. AoM will continue to publish at least one article and one podcast episode each week, and will continue to be free.

The decision to reduce episodes is due to a desire to maintain high guest selection standards and spend more time on writing. The hosts have been selective in choosing guests who have interesting, unique, edifying, and useful ideas, and are able to express them articulately.

The hosts have been married for almost twenty years and have seen many digital outlets come, go, and alter themselves beyond recognition. They are finding it increasingly difficult to maintain their guest selection standards, as it's becoming harder to find topics they haven't already done and done well, and to book folks who have something fresh and worthwhile to say.

The new Substack will give the hosts a chance to write longer-form articles in a sustainable way, and to write on some topics that don't quite fit under the Art of Manliness umbrella. Dying Breed Subscription costs $5/month or $50/year, offering subscribers a focused, ad-free reading experience.

The hosts will be using the time saved from moving to one podcast episode a week to write articles for Dying Breed. In 2025, the Sunday Firesides will return exclusively in the Dying Breed Substack.

Over the years, the hosts have read over a thousand books and recorded a thousand episodes, hosting some of the best thinkers multiple times. The podcast started in 2009 and initially offered one episode per week. In 2019, it expanded to two episodes weekly. Now, it's returning to its roots, focusing on delivering high-quality, meaningful content without fluff or filler.

Subscribing to Dying Breed will provide readers with a unique opportunity to interact with the hosts and other readers in the comment section, making it a community for those who appreciate the hosts' approach to life and learning.
