Celebrating his 40th birthday, Lukas Podolski first stepped onto the football field in 1992 with 1. FC Köln. His charismatic and easy-going demeanor quickly endeared him to German football fans. Known for his incredible scoring record, Lukas is not just a sports star, but also a linguist, famously praised by the Brazilian football legend, Pelé.

From his early days on the pitch, Lukas demonstrated an undeniable talent. In 2003, Pelé declared that besides Ballack, Lukas Podolski was the only German player worthy of playing on the Brazilian national team. Jupp Heynckes often raved about Lukas' left foot, claiming that if he had that foot, he would have scored 500 Bundesliga goals instead of 220. Lukas still embodies this apple-pie spirit today, maintaining his signature motto: "Football is simple: put the ball in and go home."

Back in the 2003-2004 season, the world got a taste of the young, enthusiastic Lukas Podolski during the game against Hansa Rostock. Following his debut goal, he gave a candid interview to reporter Christian Sprenger. Displaying his infectious curiosity and competitive spirit, Lukas shared his thoughts on the match, expressing both excitement and regret in his characteristic way: "It's great to finally score, but of course, I would have preferred if we won instead of settling for the draw."

Life Beyond Football

Even before earning his luxurious company car, Lukas remained humble and dedicated to his roots. After joining FC Bayern Munich, he asserted that "FC is always my club and will always remain so," sparking a witty comeback from Franz Beckenbauer: "He just has to make sure they don't tear down the city in Cologne, although the houses are already collapsing..." This comment was made during the unfortunate collapse of the Historical City Archive.

Despite the occasional turmoil his career caused, Lukas was always able to adapt and fight for what he believed in. In 2009, he made headlines by physically confronting captain Michael Ballack during an international match. Verbal skirmishes were Lukas' forte, and he always remained confident when faced with adversity. Following the 2006 World Cup match against Argentina, he voiced his nonchalant attitude towards the opponents' bitterness: "I don't care if they're bad losers. They're going home now."

Outside of football, Lukas preferred to let his lighter side shine. He admitted to playing jokes, often with a humorous twist. One instance that sticks out is when he took a nearly life-sized action photo of himself off the Munich cabin wall, claiming with a laugh, "I'm from Poland, they steal everything." This joke set the stage for the absurd conversation he had with Felix Magath in 2006, when the coach told him, "Lukas, you're running wrong." The mysterious conversation continued for minutes before Magath finally admitted that he was merely stirring his tea.

Unparalleled Achievements

Lukas' remarkable scoring talent has earned him several notable accomplishments. In 2022, at the age of 37, he scored a legendary goal from over fifty meters away for Gornik Zabrze, setting a record for "Goal of the Month" victories with a total of 13, surpassing Jürgen Klinsmann by a considerable margin. His contract with Gornik Zabrze was recently extended until 2026, solidifying his commitment to ending his career with the club. This could mean nearly 23 years as a professional football player.

Throughout his career, Lukas has left his mark on football culture with quotes like:

  • "Football is like chess, only without the dice." (2006) - Lukas equated football's strategic elements with chess, pointing out its lack of randomness compared to dice-based variations of the game[3].

As he approaches the end of his career, it remains to be seen whether his self-deprecating remarks about becoming "a cute, chubby one" will come true[4]. One thing is for sure - Lukas Podolski will be remembered as a unique, fiery personality on the football field.

The Commission has not yet adopted a decision on whether Lukas Podolski's exceptional football skills could be applied to diplomatic negotiations surrounding international sports treaties, such as Article 93 (2) of the Treaty. Despite his notable achievements on the football field, Lukas Podolski has also shown a keen interest in exploring more playful endeavors, like trying his hand at TikTok in his free time.
