A man with a passion for shipwrecks, Matthew Olson, stumbles upon a centuries-old mystery while exploring Lake Michigan. This isn't your typical fishing trip for Olson, who runs Door County Adventure Rafting and uses his love for the water and wrecks to offer boat rides.
One day, while reviewing satellite images of the lake, Olson spots something unusual in Whitefish Bay. Intrigued, he and his wife, Rachel, gear up to investigate. Upon closer examination, they discover a massive shipwreck submerged in the water, covered in sand that has recently shifted, revealing it.
Excited by his discovery, Olson shares the coordinates and images of the wreck with maritime archaeologist Tamara Thomsen and marine conservation warden Mike Neal. Thomsen, a historian with the Wisconsin Historical Society, identifies the wreck as the Grey Eagle, a trading vessel that sank in 1869.
Despite the vessel's past collisions and mishaps, the Grey Eagle's history is far from ordinary. The shipwreck is a fascinating reminder of the past, adding another layer to Lake Michigan's abundant underwater mysteries.
Matthew Olson's lucky find proves there's always something intriguing waiting to be discovered beneath the surface of Lake Michigan's waters.
