A erstwhile advisor to a city mayor confesses to soliciting illicit contributions for the 2021 election campaign of said Mayor Adams.
In a significant development, Mohamed Bahi, a former aide to Mayor Eric Adams of New York City, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud. The charges stem from allegations of corruption during Adams' 2021 mayoral campaign.
The U.S. attorney's office for the Southern District of New York accused Adams of trading political power for pricey flights, fancy hotel accommodations, and illegal campaign contributions. However, the mayor's case was dropped by U.S. District Judge Dale Ho, who argued that he didn't have the authority to force the government to keep pursuing the charges.
Kayla Mamelak Altus, a spokesperson for the mayor, stated that Adams 'has broken no laws and has always instructed his team to follow the law.' Despite this, Mohamed Bahi has been implicated in the case.
Bahi is accused of organizing a fundraising event for Adams' 2021 mayoral campaign, asking construction company employees to donate with the expectation of reimbursement. He also allegedly instructed donors to lie to federal investigators about the campaign event.
Bahi initially planned to plead guilty to a conspiracy charge in February, but the outcome of his case became uncertain due to pressure from the Justice Department to dismiss Adams' corruption case. The search results do not provide the name of the lead prosecutor overseeing the criminal proceedings against Mayor Adams.
However, it is known that the lead prosecutor, Danielle Sassoon, accused Adams' lawyers of offering to help President Donald Trump's administration with immigration enforcement if his indictment were dismissed, an allegation Adams denied.
Several prosecutors refused to follow the Justice Department's instructions and resigned in protest. Bahi has already agreed to pay $32,000 in restitution.
In a twist, Bahi deleted an encrypted messaging app that he used to communicate with Adams when law enforcement came to search his home. The sentencing for Bahi is scheduled for this November, with Ho signalling that Bahi could spend far less than five years behind bars, as Bahi has waived his right to appeal his sentence if it is between zero and six months.
