A drone falling in Poland is traced back to its origin in Russia
In the early hours of the morning, a significant incident occurred near the village of Osiny, approximately 100 kilometers south of Warsaw, Poland. A Russian military drone crashed and exploded in a cornfield, causing minor damage to nearby homes but no casualties.
According to local reports from LukowTV, the incident was preceded by a bright flash and a loud bang. Onet published pictures from social media showing a charred motor with a propeller, while the police and army are currently searching the area for more evidence.
The drone's entry into Polish airspace is believed to have originated from Belarus, not directly from Russia, according to Polish prosecutors. Poland's defense minister, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, has labelled the incident a provocation against NATO, pointing to prior Russian airspace violations in the region.
The Polish air defenses activated during the night, but the drone flew extremely low to avoid radar detection, making it undetected before the crash. The drone left a crater about six meters in diameter and 50 centimeters deep, with burned plastic and metal debris found at the crash site by police officers.
The exact circumstances surrounding the explosion are unclear, with speculation as to whether it occurred in the air or on the ground. The Polish government has stated that Russia is deliberately provoking NATO countries, and has lodged a diplomatic protest to Moscow.
NATO has been informed about the incident, but Poland stressed that it does not trigger collective defense (Article 5) procedures. All NATO allies have been informed about the incident by the Polish government.
This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing risks for NATO’s eastern flank due to drone activities related to the Russia-Ukraine war and tensions involving Belarus as a possible transit point. It is worth noting that in November 2022, a rocket hit the eastern Polish village of Przewodow, killing two men.
Poland, which sees itself threatened by Russia, is heavily arming in response. The Polish government has expressed concerns over the escalating tensions and the potential for further provocation from Russia.
This developing story will continue to be monitored closely as more information becomes available.
