"My Life Turned Upside Down After a Cat Bite"

In the heart of Stuttgart, a once-vibrant beautician's life took an unexpected turn due to a seemingly harmless favor.

"My life turned upside down after a cat bite!"

Kathrin Behrendt, a 57-year-old entrepreneur who excelled in beauty treatments, modeling, and sports like climbing, was in the prime of her life. However, her world came crashing down following a fateful incident in July 2020.

The source of her misery? A cat's bite. Little did she know, the bacterial agents present in the cat's saliva would wreak havoc in her body, as it was revealed she was suffering from an array of health issues, including Lyme disease and bartonella.

"I've been living in exhaustion ever since", Behrendt recounts. "My joints and muscles ache, and my ligaments and tendons have become unstable, putting immense stress on my upper cervical joints, the cervical spine, nervous system, and blood vessels. The unbearable pain, accompanied by ligament cracking, leaves me helpless."

Attempts to stabilize the patient's head in Barcelona

Behrendt has spent a significant fortune, approximately 85,000 euros, in attempts to rectify her situation, including multiple visits to a specialized clinic in Barcelona, blood washes, specialized MRI scans, and medication. Yet, her health remained unaffected.

Could a seemingly minor cat bite have such devastating consequences?

Her next hope lies in stem cell therapy with an estimated cost of around 70,000 euros. Recovering from Lyme disease, for instance, with the aid of hyperthermia therapy and antibiotics, is a necessary prerequisite.

The predicament: Kathrin Behrendt has drained her financial resources, living on an 1100 euros disability pension. Her son has set up a fundraising campaign on the web to acquire her much-needed resources.

Late in her arduous journey, Behrendt discovered that the feline she had taken in for ten days suffered from an undetermined infectious disease. Despite extensive therapy and treatment, as well as substantial financial investments in Barcelona, she has not been able to recover fully. (Stuttgart regional reports)

Currently, Behrendt is being treated at a local hospital, grappling with continuous pain and mobility limitations, relying on a neighbor for sustenance, as her financial means have been depleted by medical costs. (Hospital, Pain, Cat, Infectious disease)

Enrichment Insights:

While cat bites can lead to severe health issues - such as bacterial infections like those caused by Pasteurella, Streptococcus, and Staphylococcus, as well as cat scratch disease, caused by Bartonella henselae - Lyme disease is not typically a consequence. The risks include complex infections, complications, and severe health problems, especially for individuals with weakened immune systems. Craniocervical instability, a condition associated with Kathrin Behrendt's case, is generally linked to different root causes, such as trauma, degenerative disorders, or congenital abnormalities, rather than cat bites.
