Nabbing a Bargain on Two Wheels: ADAC Uncovers Gold in Bike Negotiations

A bicycle's cost frequently gets slashed.

Ready to hit the road, but your wallet's taking a detour? Fret not! The art of haggling can squeeze some savings out of your bike purchase. The ADAC put pedal to the metal to find out just how much wiggle room you've got when buying a new set of wheels.

Saddling up for a shopping spree? Negotiation is your new best friend. While begging for a lower price might make some squirm, it's worth it! After all, who doesn't love saving some cash?

The ADAC took to the streets, visiting 100 stores across the country, on the hunt for discounts. The results? A discount was up for grabs in a whopping 88% of cases, even when the bike was on the price tag already!

They focused on two niches: pricey e-mountain bikes (over €3,500) and economical city bikes (around €1,000).

Bikes Cheaper than Ticket Price

First stop: scoping out if there was a discount already on the price tag, compared to the Recommended Retail Price (RRP). Then, two attempts to haggle ensued. Surprise, surprise—the bike was always cheaper than RRP in 88% of the stores visited!

Half of the retailers already had a reduced price on the price tags, no negotiations needed. The rest of the stores let their guard down during the first price negotiation (63%), with an additional 46% caving in during the second chat.

Average saving? A 13% discount for those tough hill-climbers (e-mountain bikes) and a 15% drop for city bikes. Not all discounts were straight cash, either. Accessories like locks and free servicing were also part of the deal.

City versus Countryside: A Price Battle

The ADAC spies noticed a significant price gap between bustling cities and the countryside. Half of the city bikes already had a lower price than the RRP, while a mere one-third of the rural stores were willing to match the competition's prices.

A word to the wise: Don't stick to just one store. Prices for the same bike can vary wildly depending on your location.

So, rev up your bargaining skills and ride off into the sunset with some extra change jingling in your pocket!

  3. Mirror Mirror: Mention lower prices offered by competitors to secure a better deal.
  4. Manners Matter: Be polite but persistent during the negotiation process.
  5. Bundled Savings: If purchasing accessories, inquire about a bundle discount.
  6. Know Your Limitations: Beware that retailers may have limited flexibility on certain models during peak seasons.
